New Year, New Congress, Same Message: Not One Dollar for Trump’s Racist Agenda

Washington, D.C.—Today is the first day of the 116th Congress and a new Democratic majority in the House. Today is also the 13th day of the partial government shutdown that is affecting hundreds of thousands of federal employees and contract workers. Shortly after being sworn in, House Members passed bills to end the Trump shutdown and continue funding DHS through February 8th. Kica Matos, FIRM Action spokeswoman, said the following:

“We worked tirelessly to elect a Congress that represents our families and our values. We welcome the new Congress and look forward to working with the House leadership to hold this administration accountable for its cruel and dangerous actions against our communities. Trump is using immigrant families and federal employees as bargaining chips, holding the country hostage in exchange for a destructive and dangerous wall that would undoubtedly hurt border communities and the environment.

Senate Republicans have a choice to make now. They can either stand with our families, send people back to work and reject any additional funding for Trump’s capricious and xenophobic agenda, or they can continue to align themselves with the white supremacists in the Oval Office, effectively turning their back on democracy and the will of the people. It’s time that elected officials lead with values.”
