Trump Attacks Immigrant Families Again, Endangers Millions of Children

WASHINGTON, DC— The Trump administration announced changes to the ‘public charge’ rule, proposing to prevent immigrants on the path to citizenship who use some government benefits from gaining permanent lawful immigration status. Dorian Warren, President of CCCA, and Kica Matos, spokesperson for FIRM Action issued the statement below:

Dorian Warren, President of CCCA, said:

“This is a simultaneous attack on immigrants and essential safety net programs that help families make ends meet. Imagine having to choose between putting food on the table or keep your family together. The administration is using race to undermine the social safety net by intentionally pitting white against black, non-immigrant against immigrant. Through the proposed changes to the public charge rule, the Trump administration is threatening the health and wellbeing of millions of children.

We can fight back by weighing in. The public can comment on this cruel proposal and we urge every individual to speak against this policy change when the comment period begins.

And more importantly, we can all vote for unity on November 6th to make sure that every family is together, free and thriving.”

Kica Matos, spokesperson for FIRM Action, said:

“Donald Trump, Stephen Miller and other senior administration officials have one goal when it comes to immigration: make America white again by destroying immigrants who work hard to provide for their families.

The proposed changes could force immigrant moms and dads to choose between meeting basic needs and keeping their families together in the country they call home. Not only is this heinous and cruel, it goes against the values that define our nation. It is a part of the GOP’s intentional scheme to divide us and blame people of color while they help line the pockets of their already rich friends.

We can and must do better. The proposed rule changes will undergo a public comment period and we are urging individuals to speak out against this hateful change in policy once the comment period begins. There are less than 45 days until the polls open and immigrant voters are ready to course-correct the nation. Any politician seeking reelection should take note: if you’re not with us, you’re against us and we will vote you out of office on November 6th.”
